Soldier Ballad

There we sit in our box by the bridge and the river,
And we drink up our bottles of sweet wine and beer,
Then all curse the day when we march to the ocean,
And we all toast the day when our victory we'll cheer.

Then we'll kiss all the children and we'll wave to the ladies,
And we'll all be the heroes marching back from the war,
But if you're not my true love I will think of you always,
And I'll live for my homeland evermore.

Now the evening has fallen and we're all out of danger,
And we all say the same prayer though no tears have been cried.
And we dream of loved ones and we long for our homeland,
And we mourn for our comrades in the field who have died.

Soon we'll kiss all the children and we'll wave to the ladies,
And we'll all be the heroes marching back from the war,
But if you're not my true love I will think of you always,
And I'll live for my homeland evermore.

Now the battle is over and the cannon are silent,
The prisoners are marching and our victory is here,
But my eyes are on fire and I can't see my comrades
But I'm sure in a moment everything will be clear.

And we'll kiss all the children and we'll wave to the ladies,
And we'll all be the heroes marching back from the war,
But if you're not my true love I will think of you always,
And I'll live for my homeland evermore.
